The UNESCO Global Geopark label is awarded by UNESCO and the Global Geoparks Network to an area with an outstanding geological heritage. It recognises the ambitious approach taken by an area and all its representatives (elected representatives, associations, local residents, etc.).
Does a Geopark only refer to geology?
No. While a UNESCO World Geopark must demonstrate the international importance of its geological heritage, its main objective is to explore, develop and celebrate the links between this geological heritage and all other aspects of natural, cultural and intangible heritage. It is about reconnecting humanity at every level of the planet, and revealing how it has shaped aspects of our lives and societies over the last 4,600 million years.
The label is based on 3 pillars:
Preservation
A better scientific understanding of the sites means that management measures can be taken and adopted, if necessary, to preserve their geological wealth.
Education
In a Geopark, geology is a key entry point for raising awareness of the environment and the region.
Local development
In a Geopark, geotourism contributes to local development through sustainable tourism that highlights this remarkable geological heritage.
By showcasing the geological riches of its territory, the Geopark will help to raise awareness and understanding of important social issues facing the planet.
